low coolant. usually once it is tripped it will stay on until the ignition is cycled. so if the level is right on the border line it may only trip the light if u r going uphill, or whatever and then will stay on until the car is sut off

This is the coolant level idiot light, Mercury messed up when they designed this and the light goes on when the coolant is well within tolerance. You can either replace the sensor with a new one from ford that has been redesigned, or you can top off the coolant to just at the Max line, or to just a little above, that should turn the light off.
