Why does the radio volume drop as a car speeds up?

The radio volume doesn't change - it is the other ambient noises associated with increasing speed (road noise, engine revs, other vehicles) that make it appear that the radio is getting softer.

Some radio systems compensate for this automatically and lower the volume when decreasing speed and vice versa.
