Why does the reverse gear not work on a 4 speed automatic RWD sedan?

Brake band slipping?/ linkage fault? would either of those problems still allow the forward gears to work? Yes, mine was brake band adjustment but linkage fault also possible. How much was it to fix? A few years ago now but less than $300 in a local auto trans shop
