Because of the domino theory. The North was communist and wanted to unite Vietnam to become one communist country. The USA backed the south because it wasn't communist and didn't want Vietnam to fall to communism.
Not sure how they were different but I do know that the US supported the south because we basically wanted to stop the spread of communism. The north was controlled by communists and we didn't want to south likewise
