Why does the voltage regulator in a 1989 Ford Probe overcharge?

On my 89 Probe it overcharged because I needed a new alternator. Sometimes a bad computer causes "spikes" in the voltage. In this case, turn the headlights on at night, if they flicker like high beams, then the computer is NG. -CE

i have a 65 thunderbird and what i did was got rid of my ford alternator and voltage regulater and replaced it with a Chevy one wire alternator they have a built in voltage regulator and it'll last you longer....unless you want to keep it all original, in that case i don't know.
