Why does water go one way round the plug hole and sometimes the other way?

People often believe that water goes clockwise or anti-clockwise depending on which hemisphere you are in due to the Coriolis force of the Earths spin. This isn't true.
The direction water curls down the plug hole depends completely on whether the water is still or moving in a certain direction before the plug is removed.
But don't depsare!!! The Coriolis force DOES have an effect on large whirlpools in the ocean, just not in sinks and baths.

[despite the fact that this is under "rhetorical questions" I will answer it anyways] Man-holes are round because no matter which way you turn the lid, it will never fit into the round hole (With a slightly smaller diameter). If it were any other shape, like a square or triangle, it would be possible to drop the lid in the hole by turning it diagonally.
