It could be any number of things and you give very little information. A quick way to check would be to put a volt meter on the battery with the car off it should show near 12.6 volts (anything about 12.2v is ok). Start the car and check the voltage it should be around 13.5v, if the same as with the vehicle off check the alternator to battery wire and that the alternator is 12volts. If the power doesn't change when you turn the car off it is probably the alternator.
I do think you need to give more info cause a car going dead could be any number of things. I recommend you go to the nearest automotive store and getting your battery and alternator tested by them to make absolutely sure they are the problem.

It is a component of the alternator
This usually means that you have a dead battery. Either from a bad battery, or a bad alternator.
The engine computer is the voltage regulator in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The regulator is in the engine computer not the alternator.
The weight of the Jeep Cherokee varies a bit by year and model. The curb weight of the Jeep Cherokee 2-door model made from 1984-1986 is 3,357 pounds.

Bad Alternator and have your battery checked for bad cells
When my jeep cherokee alternator went bad, the check engine light came on and I didnt have a clue what was going on until my volt guage was reading in the red zone. When I replaced my alternator, the light went off. So in my opinion i wouldnt consider the check engine light as a alternator light.
