when you turn the heat on it comes out of the motor compartment in to the car,, further cooling the engine.
A good thing to know if your car is running hot: turn the inside heat on full blast to help cool it down some.
The gage is broken or the wire is broken or the sensor in the tank is broken or the fuse is blown.
It could be the wiring, or more likley the temperature sender is bad.

I was looking at the 1996 Ford Escort Owner Guide and it doesn't show anything about it having a low fuel warning light ( or a check " gage " light )
Run your engine for awhile, if it seizes up, the pump wasn't working.
I believe that is the check transaxle warning light , have it checked out by a professional

do all the gages come up (alternator gage, fuel gage ect..) if not replace the main engine computer mine just died goin down the road and i had 2 replace the computer and havent had a problem sunce
