Check the steering valves, pump, hoses and cylinders in the Power Steering system. Make sure the hoses are fairly flexible. The hoses can get a little stiff in hot weather. The pump should draw down the RPM of the engine if it is working correctly. The control valves on the linkage system must be clean and be able to operate smoothly. Dirt can wreak havoc with the smooth flow of a power steering system. Also, make sure the power steering fluid is at the recommended level.
Bad power steering pump
Steering/suspension components worn? Bad steering rack? Power steering pump getting weak?
Possibly the belt driving the power steering pump is worn or loose, and when wet, slips, causing the steering to get stiff.
you power steering fluid may be low, if that was the case then you would have lowerd hydrolic power to steer the wheels and have to compensate by using more force...which may be why your steering is stiff.
Steering is "way too stiff" where is adjustment located and how do I proceed. Thanks...Ron
No. The power steering is in no way associated with the transmission. If it runs low, your steering will get stiffer and you might ruin your power steering pump (making steering very stiff.) It will harm the trans if you add it to the trans fluid.
Transmission Range sensor evidently is the answer. This is called a couple of different names but located on top of transaxle. I have same problem with just power steering getting stiff after replacing the pump and rack & pinion.
If the power steering fluid leaks out the steering would become very stiff, and perhaps "lock" if the car were parked.
likely a low power steering fluid problem , caused by a leak , if there is a grinding /whinnying noise at same time it`s probably this or a loose power steering belt
Your cars power steering pump has to warm up for a little while to stop it.
something wrong with power steering. check for leaks. The power steering pump may also be broken. but whatever the cause is, it's a good bet it's power steering problem.
Bad steering rack? Bad steering gear? Pitman arm?
