The old style 'incandescent' light bulb consists of only a skinny piece of wire

inside, that heats and glows when electric current flows through it. It doesn't

care which direction the current is flowing.

But the LED is a Light Emitting Diode ... an electronic component whose

two ends are not identical. One end of it is the 'cathode' and the other end

is the 'anode'. It's not important just now to know what those mean, just to

know that they're different. The LED wil light only if current is flowing through

it in one direction, and won't light at all if the current flows the other way ...

which is exactly what happens when you turn the battery around.
