Check your fuses, using a simple, $2 "circuit tester": Looks like an ice pick, with a clear handle that contains a bulb; an ice pick that attaches to the handle, and a black wire at the other end of the hand, which has a plastic-coated, alligator clip on the end of the wire.
Cost: <$3.00 (USD); Assorted Fuse Kit, with fuses and puller:: <$7 (USD)
Location of fuse: Look under your dash, just to the left-hand side of your steering column, of you were sitting in the driver's seat, looking forward.
HOW to use: Attach the alligator clip, to any bolt or screw head, or even just the emergency brake metal. You are looking for any bare (unpainted) metal, to clip to. Next, use the end of the "ice pick" end, to touch either the left or right side
of the fuse head. IF the bulb lights-up, the fuse is good. If no light, the fuse(s) is blown. Pull the fuse out, noting the number (amperage) of the fuse, and location from where you pulled the fuse from, IF YOU HAVE PULLED-OUT MORE THAN ONE BLOWN FUSE.
Replace fuses with the ones in your fuse kit, making sure you are plugging-in the right fuse into the right fuse socket. Draw a diagram IF you have to, in case you have more than ONE fuse to replace.
When finished, start your Explorer. Try out everything that is electrical. IF there is still a problem, there is another fuse "panel", under the hood, on the driver's side of the engine compartment. It has a large, black, rectangular cover on it, which you simply pry-off to expose the fuses. You can test these fuses, which are LARGER than the ones in your kit; remove the ones that are blown; go to your local auto parts store; buy the replacement fuses you need. Make sure that IF you pull more than ONE fuse, you draw a diagram: showing the location and amperage (number on end of fuse) and COLOR of the FUSE.
You can attach the alligator clip on the end of your test light, to the NEGATIVE battery terminal of your battery, or any BARE metal point, in the engine compartment.
Once finished, replace the cover, start-up your Explorer and test out whatever was NOT WORKING before you replaced the blown fuse(s). IF the fuse(s) blow, again, take you vehicle to your local Ford Dealership. They have a diagnostic machine, which can track-down a faulty ground, blown "fuse link", or short much easier than you prodding around and trying to read the wiring schematics for your Explorer.
Cost: $78.00-$150.00 (USD)
