Why has bullying increased?

There are a number of factors here. Part of it is just an increased awareness and people finally saying that enough is enough. But if it is increasing, here are some possible causes:

1. The world is getting smaller. The population is increasing, and so is the use of technology like the internet and cell phones. So this all gives the perception that the world is getting smaller. Consider this. Lets say you take on a roommate. You might argue and fight for a while, but then you both eventually learn how to get along. Then add another person, and you both would have to adjust to the new roommate. Then if you keep adding people, you eventually reach a point to where tensions stay high all the time. There will be differences in tastes, only so many electronic gadgets to share, competition for resources, difficulty in moving around, and some may have to sleep on the floor.

2. People are becoming pickier. There are websites and television shows which attack differences in styles. Schools create more demanding dress codes and require uniforms, making it more difficult to develop maturity in accepting differences. Creating more products and services add to this problem, since others cannot understand if certain differences can be eliminated why more people won't work to eliminate them. Orthodontics and cosmetic surgeries have existed for years, but not all can afford them. But now, not only does society expect straight teeth, but they also expect them to be very white.

3. There are more ways to be different that bother people. Sure, things like homosexuality and interracial relationships have always existed, but in the past, such differences were hidden from others. Now as they become more common in the open, society has to learn how to adjust.
