Socialism is not a form of government. It is an economic system much like capitalism, mercantilism and feudalism.

People support the basic idea of socialism for different reasons.

For economic reasons, one might support socialism as a means to "rationalize" the economic system by eliminating the boom-and-bust cycle inherent to capitalism, to allow for full employment, efficient use of resources, and public ownership over large industries so that the profits can be distributed more evenly amongst the population.

Socialism may also be supported by those who criticize capitalism on cultural and moral grounds.

Philosophically, socialism is advocated for greater equality, individuality as defined as enabling a greater scope for self-actualization and the expansion of democratic-decision making into the economic aspects of society.

By "socialism", most developing countries actually mean national self-determination, national ownership of Natural Resources and major industries and their utilization to benefit their impoverished populations.

This goes hand-in-hand with their anti-colonial and anti-imperialist sentiment, which they see as being the cause of their underdevelopment and the foreign exploitation of natural resources. The label "socialism" is often adopted or integrated into their philosophy because Imperialism and colonialism is often associated with global "capitalism".

This policy of "economic nationalism" looks attractive to them because it gives them the power to direct the development of their own national economies without, or with minimal, foreign influence, and grants them control and ownership over their natural resources that were previously the property of foreign businesses.

In actuality, these nations are not developed enough to pioneer the development of an actual socialist economic system (a post-capitalist economy), and are even, in some cases, pre-capitalist in their economic structure, relying heavily on agrarian, semi-feudal and communal forms of organization.

Socialism promises a world where everyone's wants are satisfied. Whether or not this is achievable is highly debatable, but the argument is, at the very least, emotionally compelling.
