because it killed lots of innocent people and the Japanese were ready to surrender in 1944. They only had one condition: that their emperor hirohito would be able to keep his throne. so the atomic bombs were not needed to end the war and the Japanese were going to surrender soon anyway so dropping the bomb was just to make sure that they did not keep fighting and get the upper hand.

The atomic bomb was the first major example of a growing relation between science and political power. Also, the lightning-speed, total devastation of the blasts, along with the radiation that lingered for years and claimed victims even decades later, was shockingly new to the public. This weapon could not only destroy cities and people, but humanity itself. This thought of destroying all of humanity is very important because, in fact, many more Japanese died in the earlier fire bombings than in the two atomic blasts. The atomic bomb should not have been used because it clearly was not only meant as a weapon to kill the Japanese, but a tool to strike everlasting Horror into the hearts of all people by threatening the existence of mankind.
