While information technology is a field that still has jobs to fill, there are many other factors that go into hiring someone. There is obviously the resume and interview. You can find plenty of resources on the internet on how to prepare for these. Having someone else look at it and give you feedback is also very valuable. Once you have a finished resume, getting it into the hands of the "right" person isn't easy. Just applying to internet sites or newpaper ads puts it in with a pile of other applicants and into a process that is designed to eliminate candidates for a whole variety of reasons. There is the saying "It isn't what you know, but who you know". Networking through friends can greatly improve your chances of landing a job. Finally, there is the mindset of the interviewer/hiring manager. Some place an emphasis on educational background, grades and what school you attended. Some look for specific experience. Others look for specific intellectual ability. The list can go on. For these reasons, your chances can improve or decrease depending on your circumstances and the hiring manager's viewpoint. In all, it is important to remember to showcase your strengths through applying your very best effort and view any rejections as more part of the quirks of the process than as a reflection on you.
