Grant liberates the Mississippi - end of the war in the West.

Lee loses at Gettysburg - ending his hopes of invading the North. (Also his health starts to fail.)

Army of the Cumberland (Union) re-takes Chattanooga - Army of Tennessee (Confederate) stays on the defensive.

Emancipation Proclamation makes it ethically impossible for free nations abroad to help the slave-owning South.

It started with the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had the effect of keeping Britain and France from supporting the South, as it would have made them look pro-slavery.

In July, the double Confederate defeat at Vicksburg and Gettysburg tilted the war in the Union's favour.

In November, Grant saved the Army of the Cumberland from destruction at Chattanooga, and was on course to become General-in-Chief of all the Union armies.

Generally speaking each of the four years of the US Civil War were important ones. The Battle of Gettysburg cannot be overlooked as a vital battle the North had to win and the South could lose and remain a dangerous enemy of the Union as time and events would prove it to be.The successful end to the siege of Vicksburg was an important Propaganda victory, but as far as the South's high command was concerned, Middle Tennessee was more important.

And, the second phase of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was just as important as the one he issued in 1862. It is pure conjecture that Great Britain and France did not officially recognize the Confederacy over the slavery issue. Each saw the South as a de facto independent nation based on all the requirements under international law at the time.

Public opinion, if any really existed, in Europe did not move European governments into action or the reverse.

All during the war, France was undermining the position of the US with their intrusion into Mexican affairs. Britain continued to do business with the South and a French bank made a substantial loan to the Confederacy after the 1862 Proclamation.

In 1863, there were major battles that impacted both sides of the US Civil War. For example, the Battle of Chancellorsville was a Southern victory that was in itself remarkable as Confederate General Robert E. Lee, against all odds defeated Union General Joseph Hooker that led to Lee's raid on Pennsylvania. Confederate General Stonewall Jackson died as a result of his wounds at Chancellorsville. Jackson was a key general in the Army of Northern Virginia. His loss forced Lee to alter his plans for his raid into Pennsylvania. Gettysburg was a huge loss of Lee, however, his army was not destroyed and would fight again. In the Western Theater, Vicksburg surrendered to US Grant after his siege forced the surrender. This gave the Union full control of the Mississippi River.

When all seemed lost for the South in 1863, it wasn't. That was due to the smashing victory of Confederate Braxton Bragg over General Rosencrans at the Battle of Chickamauga.

In addition to the military activities, President Lincoln's ultimate Emancipation Proclamation went into effect January 1, 1863.

Despite its positive effects for Lincoln there was still a problem The Emancipation was not completely accepted by some important leaders of the North. For example, the governor of Indiana warned Lincoln that Indiana's legislature was about to recognize the Confederacy.

In addition to all of these events there was another problem for the Union. The largest civilian insurrection in US history took place in New York City. In July of 1863 the draft riots there caused President Lincoln to send 20,000 troops from Gettysburg to end the 3 day riots that took the lives of many Freed Blacks, this displayed the racial problems in the North.

In summation, the events just cited made 1863 an important year in the US Civil War.
