What a stupid question. It needs a name or else nobody would know what you were talking about. Why is anything called anything? Why is a dog called a dog? Substitute any word and the answer is nearly always the same.

There is no such thing as a stupid question. People that make such remarks usually just don't have an answer or need to feel superior to the questioner.
Based wikipedia.com:
"The reason that they are called 'Jubilee' clips is something of a mystery. There are several theories but the most plausible seems to be that Commander Robinson (the inventor of the clip) couldn't think of a name and, in desperation, used the name of the bridge that he walked over every day on his way to work."
Hope this helps.
And a dog is called a dog because the term came from previous names for the animal:
"The English word dog comes from Middle English dogge, from Old English docga, a "powerful dog breed".[8] The term may derive from Proto-Germanic *dukkÅn, represented in Old English finger-docce("finger-muscle").[9] The word also shows the familiar petname diminutive -ga also seen in frogga "frog", picga "pig", stagga "stag", wicga "beetle, worm", among others.[10] Due to the archaic structure of the word, the term dog may ultimately derive from the earliest layer of Proto-Indo-European vocabulary, reflecting the role of the dog as the earliest domesticated animal.[11]"
The original word meant something to the original user that we may not know right now. People generally did not assign random names to things, that would just make it hard to remember the names of things.
