Naomi has no major contribution to the development of Judaism. Naomi's daughter-in-law, Ruth, however, has been come a role model for many converts to Judaism.

Naomi had with her a faithful daughter-in-law named Ruth who decided to follow her, while Orpah, her other daughter-in-law, chose to go back to Moab. Ruth marries Boaz and they have a son, whom Naomi cares for, and so the women of the town say "Naomi has a son" (Ruth 4:17). In this way, the book can be seen to be Naomi's story: Gregory Goswell argues that Naomi is the central character of the book. The son in question was Obed, who would later become the grandfather of David.

Naomi is not herself terribly important, but she is celebrated for being willing to share her faith with Ruth after Ruth demonstrated a receptivity to the tradition.
