Why is Pontiac firebird 99 service engine light on and engine is missing?

Service engine light means only one thing servie the engine well fisrt off if you have an exhaust leak or vaccum leak wont cause the light to come on but you will LACK POWER! first does it lack power all the time or when you push the accelorator 2 is it an auto or standard.

1)Incorrect timing

2)check for faulty distrubutor cap wires (this is only on V8s)

3)air filter dirty.

faulty ignition ciols

4)brakes binding

5)tranny fluid improper/clutch slipping

6)fuel filter clogged.

7)EGR system not functioning properyly

8)low octane V8 you can not cheap out on gas use 93 octane or you will get spark knocks and blow engine

9)Low or uneven cylinder compression. Caused by high milage and racing

10) vaccum leak in intake manifold which is not cheap.
