In some countries, especially the United Kingdom, St. Stephen's Day (December 26) is called 'Boxing Day' when families honor Stephen by boxing clothing, food and other items to distribute to the poor. When Stephen was alive he was a deacon assigned by the apostles to distribute alms to the poor.

December 26 ...Stephen was one of the original deacons appointed by the apostles to serve the Church. He was also the protomartyr - the first martyr of the new Church. He was stoned to death because of his faith about the year 33-35.
