Bacteria in our environment are not simply potential parasites of humans, but are engaged in many of the processes that affect our existence. "Helpful" bacteria prevent the growth of more harmful forms in the biosphere, contribute to the production of foods and medicines (cheese, penicillin), and help our bodies digest food (the probiotics Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium). Bacteria break down waste products in septic systems, and leaf cellulose in mulch piles. Occasionally even the "harmful" microoganisms will be beneficial, as when they kill off agricultural pests.
