If the gauge is showing less than 13 volts with the engine running, then the alternator is more than likely defective. Have the system checked at your local auto parts store.
my gauge reads 10 volts drive half mile it go to 8 Alternator is defective and needs replacing.
Either your battery is dead, or your alternator has failed.
alternator probably needs replacing not charging battery or bat is dead and not taking charge

What year is your car? Did you mean the CHECK ENGINE light? The battery gauge?

check the alternator and battery.
Low battery and when attempting to start car ran battery further down. Date and time went to default settings and fuel gauge registered empty. Charged battery. Fuel gauge still showing nothing. Picked up answer from Audiworld post. Removed fuse 15 (instrument cluster) & 28 (fuel pump), turned on ignition or to start the car - might not start, but mine did), put fuses back in. Fuel gauge now correct.
sounds like your gauge is broken or there is a short in wiring
Weak battery, or weak alternator.
Just replace the battery if you suspect it is low.
