Much of the energy the world needs in the form of electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas). This burning releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which has been stored underground for millions of years.
This extra gas is adding to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and the natural carbon cycle cannot cope with them, so they remain there, capturing the sun's heat and warming the planet. Global warming is then causing climate change. This is why our energy use is a global issue.
We need to find alternative sources of energy (like sun, wind, tides and geothermal) to generate power, so we can stop burning fossil fuels.
