It is supposedly because of possible interference with the navigational systems aboard planes. I often wonder about this when I take off and ask myself "did a plane ever crash because someone left their phone on?"

Airplane mode means that you can read your electronic book, or play games on your cell phone, but you cannot 'send'. (This could interfere with the airplane's systems that keep it up in the air. Most newer phones and e-readers have a setting called, "Airplane" mode, to prevent you from 'Sending'.
