I have 2 fish 1 died do I change the water?

Not necessarily - if you completely remove all the water, you could lose most of your beneficial bacteria that helped to establish your tank when it cycled. If your fish died from something parasitic, then yes, you need to clean absolutely everything. If it died due to a water quality issue, then no.

What could have caused tropical fish to die after putting them in a tank after only 24hours?

More information is needed to give you a educated guess as to what caused your fish to die after only 24 hours. You need to test your water for the following, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, PH, alkalinity, and chlorine. Is this a new or established tank? If new, did you condition the water with a dechlorinator? What was your water temperature? How did you acclimate your purchased fish to your tank water? Here is the best way to acclimate new fish to your tank, I've used this method for over 25 years and NEVER lost a new fish within the first few months of purchase. Get a good clean container at least twice the size of the amount of water in your bag with fish. Make sure there is no soap or other types of residue in this container, carefully empty the bag of water and fish into this container. For the next hour, every ten minutes, slowly add a small amount of water from your tank to this container. After the hour is up you should have at least twice the amount of water in this container and you can safely net the fish out and place them in your tank. Throw the water in this container away, you don't know what you might introduce into your tank with this water, bad enough the fish will have whatever's in the water on their bodies.

How long do you leave the water before puting fish in a tropical fish tank?

At least 1 week, test your water before you add any fish, you may need to leave it for longer to allow the ammonia level to come down. I had to leave mine almost 3 weeks.

Spring water for your fish tank?

That depends upon its chemical make up. Some minerals found in spring water could make the water unfit for aquatic life. My advice is to do a complete water test. In some fish, the water has to be the right consistency and temperature for the fish to survive longer, I suggest asking an expert at a pet or aquatic shop for the best results.

Is the shubunkin ill the fish keeps swimming down to the bottom of the tank and as he reaches the bottom he flips onto his side and skims across the gravel only for a split second.is he ill?

Yes, you´re Shubunkin is sick and will most likely soon be dead. Sorry to tell you , but this is just the way it is. If you´ve other fish in the tank then it´s best to remove this sick fish a.s.a.p. and bring it to a separate tank. Check the tank for rotting plants, not eaten food, etc. Remove all of these as best as you can. Check the filter and air pump. If possible test the water in the tank for ammonia & nitrate. If you don´t want to test or can´t test the water, just gently replace half of the water with clean water of the same temperature and repeat this after one week. In theory you can give the sick Shubunkin medicine, in in practice this is not very useful. If you insist then you can treat the sick fish in the separate tank. Never use medicine in the main tank, if you´ve also other fish in it. If your Shubunkin is finally dead, give it a proper funeral: bury it in your garden and put flowers on top. If you do this the spirit of the fish will give you good luck to continue your aquarium hobby.

How to clean a fish tank?

Have you been putting off cleaning your plastic fish tank and are now worried you may have created a new life-form in those murky waters? Have no fear, despite even the dirtiest tank, there are simple steps you can take to get that tank in tip-top shape. There are however certain things to consider when cleaning a plastic tank. 1. If you have to remove your fish, fill a dish with water from the tank to avoid shocking them while they patiently wait for their habitat to be cleaned. Consider removing half of the water at any given time as well as vacuuming half of the bottom gravel. Your tank has developed it’s only mini-ecosystem and drastic changes can affect the health of your fish as well as kill the needed bacteria which help remove waste. 2. A plastic tank can get scratched up very easily so it’s important to use cleaning materials that will not make marks on the tank. Hardy “spot algae” can be very difficult to remove without the use of algae scrapers specifically designed for this job. It can handle the pressure you need to apply to the walls without damaging your plastic tank. This algae is actually desired by many who like an organic background on their tank, but needs to be removed from the front and sides to allow a crystal clear view of your fish and their environment. 3. Use a sponge or other non-abrasive material to remove any remaining unwanted materials. If you are concerned with the material being used, try finding a safe “test” area on your tank to make sure it will not scratch the surface. If you have moss build-up, consider leaving a portion of this intact as it can provide your fish with natural nutrients. 4. Before filling your tank up with water it is important to test and treat it. Dechlorinators can be used if you have used city water. Do not change your filter at this time. It is important to alternate water changes and filter changes to ensure the environmental balance of your tank. 5. Clean any objects that go into the tank. If any are subject to mold or algae, a 10% bleach solution can be used. 6. Add food to the tank. This can help lower the aggression some of your more naughty fish might have when they are re-introduced to their newly cleaned habitat. 7. Gently add your fish back into their home and enjoy a clear and clean plastic fish tank.
