How do you lower alkalinity in a pool?

To lower the alkalinity in a pool you can use PH Minus or Muriatic acid. When adding pour into one spot in the deep end of the pool away from circulation, make sure the circulation system is running. Do not apply near metal fittings or near the pool skimmer. Also make sure you follow directions when using the product.

Additionally, there are no directions on a bottle of Muriatic Acid. Use muriatic acid no more than a quart at a time; testing about 20 min. intervals until goal is achieved 80 to 120 ppm. The acid is aggressive but not as bad as Sulfuric Acid ( battery acid) so also be careful where you set the bottle. Even if there is no signs of acid dribbling off the bottom of the bottle it willleave a ring.

Your pH is the opposite side of the same coin with alkalinity.

To raise it use Sodium Bicarb. With the pump motor off and water motionless, add the bicarb in the deep-end of the pool, in one spot.

Let it sit for 4 hours or more. Turn the pump on and allow to circulate for 2-3 hours, then re-test. alkalinity is 80-100ppm, not up to 120ppm.

To lower alkalinity, do the same, just use acid. The chart your need in provided in the link below.

How do you take care of fantail goldfish?

If you only have one fantail, then it should be in at least a 10 to 20 gallon tank alone. The tank should have a filter and either an air wand, or an air stone.

The temperature should be about 75 to 78F, and you should feed your fish only what it can eat in 1 to 2 minutes twice a day.

You will need to have a test kit to test the water, and you should do weekly water changes of at least 50%, and make sure you add water conditioner back per the instructions on the bottle at each water change.

What type of water do you need to use in an aquarium?

AnswerThere are generally two types of aquariums: Fresh water and salt water.

The most common tropical fish available for a home aquarium thrive in fresh water. For fresh water aquariums, people usually use tap water, but treat it first with commercially availble water treatments to remove harmful properties, such as chlorination (chlorine present in tap water will kill good bacteria that the fish will need to survive), and to obtain a pH balance that will be agreable with the fish. You can get a simple bottled chemical treatments at most any pet store.

I recommend following the link below to learn more about water for aquariums.

http://faq.thekrib.com/begin.html

AnswerSome are concerned about using filtered water (RODI) as it takes out the chemicals the fish needs. This is not an issue in saltwater aquariums as the salt mix will add the needed chemicals. This may cause problems in freshwater tanks, however preparations are available to add the missing chemicals in filtered water.

RODI water is a must in Reef tanks - it saves problems down the track.

Is a fish cold blooded or warm blooded?

It depends on the fish. Most fish are cold blooded, but a few are not. Several species of tuna, for example, are able to maintain their body temperature within large range but above the temperature of the water around them.

Well Actually, bluefin Tuna and some other species are neither warmblooded nor coldblooded. They are species in between, meaning that they selectively warm parts of their body.

Also the Tuna does not spend energy to keep warm like warm blooded animals, it just has two specific sets of thin blood vessels that work as heat exchangers. One close to the brain and one close to the tail. The tail heat exchanger warms the blood coming cold from the gills, by passing it next to the warm blood, going from the hot tail swimming muscle to the gills.
Almost all fish are cold blooded. However, some species of Tuna are able to maintain a body temperature above the ambient seawater temperature using a special organ called the 'rete mirable'.

How often do you clean a fish aquarium?

Depending on fish population and tank size, a freshwater should be cleaned anywhere from every day to once a month. If you have a lightly stocked aquarium, monthly 25% waterchanges will be fine. If you are very overstocked, then you should do waterchanges weekly or more. If you have just the right stocking level for your tank, every 2-3 weeks will suffice. You may have to do it more often if your aquarium is overstocked or if you have very messy or larger fish. General stocking guide is 1 inch of TROPICAL fish for every gallon of water and 1 inch of COLDWATER fish for every 3 gallons. This is because coldwater fish get much larger than tropical fish so they need more room and they create more waste. The reason you should do a partial water changes even if you have a filter system is because your filter contains bacteria that change ammonia (fish waste by-products that are harmful for the fish) into nitrItes (ammonia by-products that are just as harmful to fish) and there is another bacteria that changes nitrItes into nitrAtes (nitrite by-product that is not as harmful to fish). These nitrAtes can be removed and diluted with a partial water change. Simply replacing water that has evaporated isn't enough as the water that evaporated is pure and these harmful chemicals cannot be dissolved into a gas form. When you do a water change, never replace the filter at the same time as this can remove some of the beneficial bacteria. Be sure to clean your gravel at least every 1-4 months so that your tank doesn't look like a mudslide hit it.

How do you clean aquarium sand?

If you mean before it is put in the tank then a good wash in a bucket is the normal thing. If on the other hand you mean how to remove the rubbish from gravel/sand in the aquarium already, then a syphon will usually lift the rubbish off the top. There are commercial air driven gravel syphons available at most pet shops.

How does an aquarium gravel vacuum work?

Air is pumped into the side of an open ended tube one end of which is placed at the bottom of the tank. Air rises in water, so the rising air creats a collumn of rising water in the tube. A small material bag is placed at the top end of the tube and as the water flows into this bag it filters back into the tank. If the other end of the tube is moved around close to the mulm and rubbish on the (subtrata) bottom of the tank, the water flowing into the tube will lift the rubbish up the water column where it is filtered out and remains in the bag at the top for later removal.

In saltwater aquariums what kind of sand do you use?

Why do goldfish move rocks in their aquarium?

Fish do not care how long you spend decorating their tanks they just want to move the rocks. They do this because they check the rock to see if there is any algae or other feeding substances by putting it in their mouth.

Various reasons; perhaps to shovel & excavate to make a 'nesting depression', or to examine it for nutrients to feed on.

Do you keep the light on an Aquarium on during the night?

When I started my aquarium, the book I read recommended eight hours of artificial light a day. I put mine on a timer and actually only run it for six hours as the algae was terrible. Bear in mind, mine is a ten gallon fresh water tank, a salt water or living tank may be different.

NO, fish are used to night & day, just like you! Turn it off when you go to bed or put it on a timer. Allow the fish to have some sleep. Light produce heat as a result of which temperature changes which the fish don't like when sleeping.

Also, light disturbs the fish in sleep.

Why is salt sometimes used on watermelons?

Salting FruitThe people who salt mellons or other fruit swear that it makes the fruit taste sweeter. I know of no research confirming or refuting their opinions.

It has been shown that salt can block the bitter taste receptors on the tongue. This allows the sweet taste receptors to be more heightened by sweet. So while salt doesn't make the object sweeter by blocking some of the bitter taste buds he sweet taste buds are more active.
