Why is it my 206 Peugeot smell of petrol?

It seems that the fuel tank lid/pump housing(the one under the rear drivers side seat under the big blackring)causes leakage in a few ways-when the very very difficult to remove black plastic threaded nut that surrounds the white pump housing and secures the pump(approx. 8inches across)is removed to access the pump or the inside of the tank-it is very easily cracked or split,also when replacing the big black nut Peugeot recommend that its essential to renew the large "O"ring that seals the lid nut and all with a new one every time...Also the removal of the big black nut and the replacing can quite easily crack the nut leading to leaks if not replaced.....and finally when replacing the big black nut it is vital nut to overtighten the nut or it will quite easily crack....setting the repair back to square one.Im not sure where people are buying there parts but the best ive found in the UK was £85.pound from autoparts in UK for the part only......fitting shouldnt cost much either--BOSCH service garages are very good.P.S.good garages will have a special tool for removing the big black nut easily and safely.
