Sounds like your lower end gear linkage is either broke, or about to break. Look for the gear shift box underneath your vehicle. You'll see a cable attached to it, and covering the cable at the far end, where it hooks up to the gear, you'll see a black, plastic piece that fits over the cable. If that is cracked or broken, it will become hard to shift, then eventually give out altogehter when it breaks in two. Then the vehicle will most likely remain in the gear that is in when it breaks(reverse for instance). You'll have to turn the vehicle off, and then adjust the gear switch by hand. If that plastic cover piece is broken, you can try repairing it with JBweld. JBweld sticks to almost anything, and will bond to plastic. If not, you may to replace the whole linkage.GL!

Why would a 1996 Ford Ranger shift hard but shift when it is supposed to?

AnswerIt could be dirty fluid or a dirty filter in the transmission. That would be the best place to start if that doesnt work I would take to a transmission shop and have the bands adjusted.the 1996 ford ranger has a shift solenoid located on the transmission. This shows up when a diagnostic is run at your local advance store.

You have an automatic transmission on your 1995 Ford Mustang you cannot shift into any gears the shifter just slides up and down how would one go about repairing it themselves?

Sounds like the shift linkage is broken or disconnected somewhere. You'll need to find and repair the problem. Shouldn't be too hard.

1997 ford ranger 4.0 5 speed Grinds into reverse hard to get into firstonce in motion shifts 0k?

The synchronizing gears don't seem to be meshing right in the transmission. If the transmission is full of fluid then it will need to be taken apart to find the problem.

You have 1995 Kawasaki Bayou ATV the shifter sticks between gears and when it does shift its a hard shift?

My guess would be you shift shaft teeth are worn or your clutch is going out. Also check and see if the shifter is rubbing and catching on anything.
