Probably because the fault has not been cleare brom the on-board computer. On ome model CR-V's there is a black plastic slot in the bottom of the right side of the i9nstrument panel glass - just to the right of the odometer. On these models, inesrt the ignition key into the slot - do not turn it - hold it in the slot for 7-10 seconds, which should reset the computer. and extinguish the check engine light.

To change a check engine light the dashboard must be removed this is best done by a mechanic. To reset a engine light unplug the cars battery for half a hour.

It is possible that a check engine light on a Toyota Highlander will come on if the coolant level is low. Usually, though, there is another light that will come on that says 'low coolant' on some older Toyota's.

Only the computer can tell what made your check engine light come on. It could be your battery. If your battery is bad, replace it and see if that solves the problem. If it does not, then you will have to connect your car to the computer and find out why the check engine light came on.
Most likely the alt. quit. The battery ran out of charge. Charge the battery, start the engine, and check volts on the battery, anything less than 14 volts, like 12.3 or so, check wires, and most likely change the alt.
