Not a star: Planets such as Earth don't emit significant amounts of radiation. They don't generate energy through nuclear fusion, as the stars do.Not a satellite: Earth doesn't orbit another planet.

The earth isn't a star, because it doesn't shine by its own light. Technically, it is a satellite of the sun, because the sun is our "parent" body. Our moon is a satellite of the earth.

Does the moon count as a planet?

No. A planet is an object that orbits a star such as the sun. Since the moon orbits the planet Earth rather than the sun it is considered a moon, also called a natural satellite.

Could a planet be a satellite?

By definition a planet cannot be a satellite. A planet is a body that has cleared most of the debris in its orbit about a star. However, a satellite might have an atmosphere. Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, has an atmosphere more dense than that of earth.

What do you call a satellite of a star which orbits around it spinning on its own axis?

Earth. Or in another word, a planet.

What is the difference between a satellite the stars and a planet?

Stars are burning, hot, gaseous (our sun is a 'star') - planets are solids, more or less, like our planet, Earth. Satellites revolve around something else, like the moon is a satellite of Earth, the Earth is a satellite of the sun. The objects we send up to provide telecommunication are called 'satellites' because they revolve around the Earth.

Is the moon the closet planet to the earth?

The moon that revolves around the earth is not a star, it is part of the earth that was thrown off into space when the earth was hit by a large asteroid early in its development, about 30 million years after the earth first was formed. The closest star to the Earth is our Sun, it is a star and it is called Sol.

Do some planets on the solar system do not orbit the sun?

By definition, a planet is a celestial body that orbits a star (the sun) directly. A satellite is an object in space that orbits a planet. Mercury, which is comparable in size to our Moon, orbits the sun. Therefore, Mercury is a planet. Our Moon is a satellite of Earth. If it had its own path around the sun, we wouldn't have a moon and it would be considered a planet.

How far is the closest planet to the earth besides the sun?

The sun is not considered a planet, it's considered a star. It is however the closest star to Earth. Earth is also the third planet from the sun. Hence the name "third rock from the sun". Venus is the closest planet from the sun at around 25.5 million miles away.

Why are the planets considered satellites?

Planets are not satellites. The definition of satellite is any celestial body orbiting around a planet or star.

What is the brightest planet in the sky after the sun and the moon?

The sun and the moon are not planets. The sun is a star and the moon is a natural satellite. The brightest planet in Earth's sky is Venus.

What is the earth a satellite of?

Earth is a natural satellite of Sol, the star that we call the Sun.

Earth is to planet as sun is to?

...star. Earth is a planet, the Sun is a star.
