The pH of your stomach is very acidic it ranges between 1.5-3pH, it is maintained by hydrochloric acid (HCL) and gastrin. A specific enzyme, pepsin, is activated and works best on digesting proteins in the acidic environment.

the human stomah pH range is between 2.0 and 3.0 so it can break down food and kill harmfull bacteria that enter the body. If the stomach pH level was not at between these numbers people would often get sick and there food could not be broken down.

The pH scale goes from 0 - 14; from 0 - 6 makes a substance acidic. (From 8 - 14 makes a substance basic and 7 is neutral, which means it's neither acidic nor basic.) A 2 on the pH scale (like stomach acid) indicates that the substance is a very strong acid. Strong acids can break things down. So, it's good that your stomach has a pH of two so that you can digest and gain nutrients from your food.

An extra tidbit:

If your body senses that your stomach's pH is too high or too low, it sends out buffers, which are chemicals that are weak acids or bases that can correct the pH.

The stomachs main function is to digest food. It's pH level is 2.0-3.0 because that is what's needed to break down food.

Because the stomach contains acid to break down the food you eat. Acid has a low pH number.
