The fable of Revere comes from a Longfellow poem written in 1861 and in reality he didn't ride through the night yelling about the British coming. Longfellow wrote his poem on the eve of the civil war to remind people of the nation's history. Somehow the poem became part of history and was put into history books as fact. Revere never finished the ride, his horse was taken away and he was held by a British patrol, but thanks to Longfellow we all know who he is. He billed Congress for the ride and the cost of the horse since it was taken from him and it didn't belong to him. It was borrowed from Rev. John Larkin and was named Brown Beauty. Larkin refers to it in his will. His one big contribution was the picture on a flier after the Boston Massacre showing colonist getting shot by the British. This was pure Propaganda and was used to incite discontent between the colonist and the British troops.

The story most people hear about Paul Revere is inaccurate because it often portrays him as the sole rider and hero of the midnight ride, when in fact, there were other riders involved in spreading the alarm. Additionally, the commonly known phrase "The British are coming!" was not actually used during the ride. Instead, Revere and his fellow riders would have said something like "The Regulars are coming out" to avoid arousing suspicion.

What town did revere set out of on his famous ride?

Revere left Boston for Concord, but never finished the ride. He was arrested midway between Lexington and Concord by a British patrol and his horse taken from him. The men who did finish the ride were named Prescott and Dawes. We know of Revere because of Longfellow's poem The Ride of Paul Revere written 100 years after the event. Revere was easy to rhyme other words with so he used the name and bent history a bit. Old history books, then, took the event and the poem and wrote it as fact. Thus, history was changed in the minds of people. This happens all the time in history and is still going on. Listen my children And you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.
