2. Large established trees compete very well with small grasses for available nutrients and moisture in the soil. In an open space, grass has the advantage, because it grows quickly when there is a lot of light available, and grass therefore takes the available nutrients and moisture, making it difficult for trees to establish.
3. the understorey of plants in the forest also compete with grasses for light and nutrients.

∙ 9y agoThe undergrowth can be sparse because it is blocked by all of the other leaves at higher points on the trees. This means that the undergrowth does not get as much sunlight as the rest of the parts of the rain forest.
