Tin plated cans are not in use today. For other cans:

- plastic or zinc plated steel cans: the time of degradation depends on the humidity of the environment, temperature, acidity of the soil or water, etc. Probably ten of years.

- for aluminium cans the time of degradation is probably hundred of years

It depends on the type of can and the contents. If they are made of aluminum and have soft drinks or beer inside, then they might be bulging if they are warm and have been shaken.

Pure tin undergoes an allotropic transformation at low temperatures to white tin, then brittle nonmetallic grey tin with a diamond structure. Tin objects disintegrate at low temperatures.

The outside of the tin is treated with an anti-oxidant, however the inside is not - as it would contaminate the contents, when the tin is opened and emptied, air can get to it.
