because something in the coolant system has failed or is damaged, IE: hoses, radiator, water pump, head gasket. This is probably causing an overheating condition. If not, it will soon.

Check to see if there is water in the engine oil. If so, it will look milky and indicates a failed head gasket. This is serious and needs to be addressed before you drive the car any further.
