easy way to test it by bridging the fan switch with a piece of wire and if the fan comes on then the fan switch is broke if not check the fan fuse in the fusebox and if that's ok then the fan has gone.
Advanced Auto parts has them or can order them for you. Also europartsdirect.com
A faulty thermostatic switch would prevent the fan switching on when the engine is hot. (Located in the side of the radiator on my 1991 golf)
It's a 30amp fuse for the rad fan motor on a 1994 vw golf 1.8L engine. It's location is #19
i believe its right under the coolant container its the long black box if your fan its not coming on you can check the radiator by the battery side that's the temp switch they go bad too or check the fan belt.
There is just an overflow container, no radiator cap. Remember, pink or blue fluid only.
The thermostat in a 1996 VW Golf is located by following the lower large hose of the radiator. Before removing the thermostat be sure to drain the cooling system.
It could be the cooling fan swith, the water temperature sensor, or the cooling, (radiater), fan motor. It can allso be a loose electrical connection or a blown fuse.
Resistor on the blower motor has failed
It is an engine cooling fan that cools the fluid as it passes through the radiator.
The temperature sender is probably grounded out and keeping it on.
On almost all cars the answer is yes. The thermostat controls when the electric fan runs and does not run. Call your local dealer and ask if they have the raditor cooling fan thernostat in stock. That will answer your question for sure. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/replacement_sm/vw~thermo_time_switch~replacement.html there are a couple different switches available, but it's east to replace. Also, check your fan.
