the needle and seat that lets fuel into the float bowl isn't sealing off right or has a piece of trash in it and slowly letting fuel into the carb even though its full and it has to go somewhere usually into the air box AND on top of he piston washing the cylinder wall down so when you crank it a little more than normal wear occurs

Under the seat and to the right side of the battery is the fuse pair.
Because the air that is in the full box is being pushed while the other box that is empty has no air at all for it to be heavy.
Your stator mite have gone bad. I had the same prob on my 98 grizzly 2 yrs ago and that's what it ended up being. But I also changed the computer box on the frame
i believe they are under the air box, witch is under the gas tank..

The air filter is located under the gas tank. Remove the two srews at the top of the tank and lift the tank from the front as it will pivot near the seat. Remove srews from around air box to access air filter.
