When the four wheel drive light blinks, that is indicating a problem with your four wheel drive system. Your 1998 model has control trac, which has 2 speed sensors on the transfer case. One for the front driveshaft and one for the rear driveshaft. In another location on this website , there is an entry which states that 90 % of the time a four wheel drive light flashing is caused by a problem with one of the driveshaft speed sensors.
