Because most maps deal with specific country names, the Middle East is a geographical region that covers a number of independent and autonomous countries (such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait etc.).

Very much the same as saying "Sub-Saharan Africa", a region, not a specific location.
