A motor with large windings will have greater shunt resistance than armature resistance due to the sheer amount of copper wire it must travel through. The gauge of the wire also plays a part in this process.

What happens if load of DC series motor is disconnected?

In D.C Shunt motor, the field winding is connected parallel with the armature winding.. If you remove the supply to armature winding, the motor will stop after some time.

A 220volts series motor takes 15amperes and runs at 700rpm the armature resistance of the series winding is 0.8 ohms at what speed will it run if resistance is connected in series with supply voltage?

It will run slower because the resistance in series with the motor will take some of the voltage and thereby reduce the current to the armature windings (less magnetic field).

What is the function of armature winding of a motor?

Armature is a rotating part of the machine, the coil which wound in the core of that rotating part.

What happens if field winding of a running dc shunt motor suddenly breaks open?

when the field winding of a running dc shunt motor suddenly breaks open the motor fails to run because in the motor the stationary winding is armature and rotatory is field winding

What is the working principle of a DC shunt motor?

To ensure that the Lathe machine's motor working properly, DC motor starter is added in which it used to protect motor against damage from: • short-circuit, • long term overload, • excessive starting current, and yet to made the operating speed of motor easily to be control by operator. During starting, the motor is not turning, hence there is no internal voltage .The internal resistance is very low and thus the current flow through is very high. This condition may cause damage to the motor Hence, a staring resistor is added in which connect in series with the armature to limit the current flow until the internal voltage of motor is increasing to do the limiting. In order to prevent losses as the speed of the motor is build up; the starting resistor should be removed

What type of dc motor has its field winding in parallel with its armature windings?

Shunt Motor

What is the function of armature winding?

The winding function of an electric motor is a description of how the number of conductors in the windings around the motor changes with position.

Why armature resistance is less than 1 Ohm?

why armature resistance is very low as compare to field resistance in dc motor

What is DC shunt motor?

A shunt DC motor connects the armature and field windings in parallel or shunt with a common D.C. power source. This type of motor has good speed regulation even as the load varies, but does not have the starting torque of a series DC motor

What is shunt current and a armature current?

The terms 'shunt' and 'armature' apply to a particular type of d.c. motor, in which the field windings are connected in parallel with the armature windings. 'Shunt' is an archaic term for 'parallel', so the term 'shunt', in this context, means that the field winding is connected in parallel with the armature winding. The terms 'shunt current' and 'armature current', then describe the currents flowing in the shunt winding and armature winding, respectively.

What is the function of armature winding of a motor?

Armature is a rotating part of the machine, the coil which wound in the core of that rotating part.

Explain the necessity for the use of a starter with a dc motor?

In its simplest form, the starter of a dc motor is a variable resistance in series with the armature circuit of dc motor to reduce the high starting current so that the armature winding does not get overheated and burnt while the motor isgetting started. As the rotating armature of dc motor picks up speed, the starter resistance is gradually reduced so that the motor is able to attain its full speed when the starter is not expected to offer any additional resistance in series with the armature winding of the dc motor. At full speed the motor starts running normally, of course, without the help of starter. In other words, the starter offers resistance to armature current during starting of dc motor only. Under normal working condition of dc motor , the starter is electrically out of armature circuit of the motor. The starter protects the armature of dc motor from getting damaged. The electromotive force (emf) induced in the armature winding during starting builds up from zero value to max value to restrict the armature current within the permissible value at full speed. As the speed of armature/motor build up, armature induced emf also starts building thus reducing the role resistance offered by the starter, hence requiring it to gradually reduce as the motor picks up full speed.
