Your 4th gear is burned out. May be a transmission manufacturer's problem. I noted this problem while researching to buy a possible 2000 Pontiac Montana. These vehicles are seeming to be real losers once they hit 60,000 miles and above. You may want to check to see if there is a recall on this problem. Might want to take it to someone like AAMCO to have check out. I had a 86 Ford, Explorer the transmission began slipping at 65,000, yes just pass the warranty. AAMCO mechanic showed me a defective part, I was able to get Ford to reimburse me for the cost of the repair. Took a lot of phone calls, but at least got my $1,300 back.
The Montana not shifting into overdrive could be caused by several things. First, check the computer codes for any possible problems. Make sure that the transmission fluid is full and does not look or smell burnt. If the vehicle has high mileage, the transmission filter could need changing.
Very hard shifting between gears accompanied with a bang. That has been my experience in my Pontiac Montana.
Could be computer related. But alot of time the shifter Solonide goes on them. Get it checked out for that.
Pontiac Montana was created in 1999.
