Why on a 1990 town car the distance to empty will sometime read CO on a digital dash what does this mean?

It means Completly Out of gas. It means that you fuel gages is bad each bar stands for 1 gallon if you have 2 on top and to on bottom you are getting a wrong reading it has been happening to me for 5 years but does work after I drive for 50 miles I over filled it to many times
