I have a 2000 LeSabre that has lost all sensing of the fuel gauge. At times it reads high and others low, even when I know I have recently filled the tank. It has even gone so far as to trip the low fuel warning alarm. Every time I start the car, the fuel gauge gives a different reading. Last year a reader of "Popular Mechanics" wrote in to the Auto Advisor with the exact same problem for his 2002 Pontiac. Their response was that the fuel pump and fuel status sender are a combined unit and that it has become defective. Repair of this problem requires replacement of the entire assembly. It is located inside the gas tank. To fix this problem requires removing the gas tank and replacing the fuel pump / sender assembly. This was to the tune of $500+. Their suggestion was to use a grease pencil to write down your milage on the windshield each time you fill up. Personally, I just reset the odometer each time and try to fill up every 300 miles or so. I assume that since these GM vehicles -- all close in age -- all have the identical problem that they all suffer from the same cause.
fuel gauge sender and pump are in the gas tank (which must be removed).
Hold reset button for about 5 seconds then it should reset.
Most likely a bad sensor
Attach a fuel pressure gauge at the throttle body on the top of the motor to determine fuel pressure. Gauge can be borrowed at auto zone and they can assist as well.
If the outside temperature gauge is not reading the right temperature on a Buick Regal, perhaps it has become damaged. It can also not read the right temperature if it is wet or covered with dirt or snow.

On the left side of the front dash by the reading gauge there is a nob that looks like an oven nob, turn the nob to the left to turn the lights on. Below that is the wheel to brighten or lessen the reading gauge panel.
The fuel gauge will no longer give an accurate reading.

Either your oil pressure gauge is reading low , your engine temperature gauge is reading high , or your fuel gauge is reading low so your almost out of gas
A Buick with a 3.8 liter engine does not have an oil pressure switch. There is an oil pressure gauge. The gauge can be accessed by removing the dashboard panel. Unhook the wiring harness to the gauge. Reverse the process to replace the gauge.
More than likely you need a fuel level sensor. You can buy it at the dealership or maybe your local parts store. The sensor is in the gas tank, so you will have to drop the gas tank and change it out.
When mine stopped working, I had to have the sending unit replaced. Unfortunately, to get to it you have to drop the gas tank, as it is located inside the tank. If you have a mechanic do the work, or you attempt it yourself, be sure you get the proper replacement. I think there are a couple that will fit, but the wrong one will give you false or wrong readings at the dashboard gauge.
Go to the Driver Information Center to the left of the steering wheel and press the ENG/MET button which is the bottom button on the list. ENG stands for English and MET stands for Metric. This also affects the odometer reading, either lists it in kilometers or miles. Roger

below the fuel pump there is a diaode with a float attached, what happens is the diaode burns out with repeated usage, pull the tank pay 50.00 to get a new sender to put on the float and taaaa daaaaaaaa your fuel guage will work again

Take a measurement with nothing in the gauge. That reading is the zero-error.
The 1999 Cadillac normal coolant temperature gauge reading should be 180 degrees. A 195 degrees thermostat could be used, causing the temperature gauge to read 195.
