The reasons for rainforest destruction are economic and social.

Economic reasons include: 1) to create farmland, 2) wood is harvested, sold for timber or fuel, 3) alternate uses for the land, such as mining or creation of reserviors.

Social reasons include: 1) Settlement - creation of new towns and cities, and 2) Transportation - creation of roads or canals.

Cattle ranching became a huge reason. Europe, Russia and the US have imported many millions of tons of beef from Brazil.

More land is needed for farming, logging, and mining. The wood can be used for what we need and the space cleared for more land. Also the government get paid for it so they chop more and more down. timber and woodchips is traded with other countries.

Main reasons are for use in furnitures ,for use in building homes and roofs, for use in shipping and boats, for use in sports ( wooden boards, bats, stumps) for use in paper /pulp making, for use as fuel in fire places, cooking.

If we manage the use by technological substitutes then we can conserve our rain forests.
