Wolves need to be protected for many reasons. First and foremost, they are one of the most beautiful and majestic creatures on this planet. They are so misunderstood, though. We grew up with Fairy Tales like "Little Red Riding Hood," and "The Three Little Pigs" that we are conditioned to believe that wolves are bad and vicious. Both of which are incorrect. Wolves are highly intelligent and very loyal to their pack and their mate. They are able to bring down prey that is much larger than they are by working as a team. That is a character trait that humans need to take a lesson on. Exterminating the wolves will adversely affect our ecosystem. We need to be doing all that we can to save these beautiful creatures. Lots of people have dogs and love them very much. You wouldn't have your precious dog if it weren't for the wolf. If you are reading this, I urge you to Google "wolf sanctuary" "wolf refuge" "wolf habitat" "wolf conservation/preservation" and read about these wonderful creatures. Look at the pictures of wolves and humans interacting. Look into the eyes of a wolf, and you will know why wolves need to be protected. Their soul shines through their eyes. It is undeniable. Visit a sanctuary, donate your time and/or money. It will be one of the best things you can ever do.

wolves should be saved because they are beautiful majestic creatures.

The above is one reason, there are so many more.

The over kill and removal of wolves from much of the United States in the early 20th century severely altered the natural relationships among other animals ecologically. This disruption in the natural fauna led to major increases in some species and declines in others, adversely affecting biological diversity. Removing large predators allowed smaller, more generalized predators to increase their numbers, range and exploitation of food sources. For example, when grey wolves were eliminated, coyote numbers exploded. Similarly, elimination of red wolves from the southeastern United States was followed by an increase in coyotes and raccoons, which in turn caused a reduction in wild turkeys. As comparison this phenomenon was not the case north of the border in Canada.

The wolf's ability to cull weak and old ungulates such as elk and deer is well documented. Wolves will supplement their diet with potentially harmful species such as rats, mice, squirrels and rabbits. In those areas where wolves have been re-introduced such as Yellowstone park what is known as the cascade effect is being seen. Wolves are exerting their natural influence over a multitude of species within the park's ecosystem. Elk, now wary of the predator, have altered their grazing behaviours. Less grazing pressure from elk means streambed vegetation such as willow and aspen is regenerating after decades of harmful over browsing. As the trees are restored, they create better habitat for native birds and fish, beaver and other species. These wolves have reduced Yellowstone's coyote population by as much as 50 percent in some areas, which in turn increased populations of pronghorn sheep and red fox.

Are wolves protected?

Wolves were at one time on the brink of extinction and were rescued from becoming so in the 1970s. They were protected until 2011 when they were stripped of their protection under the Endangered Species Act by the US government. Instead they transferred the burden of this management to individual states and since then, more than 2,700 wolves have been slaughtered.

Wolves are not like the big bad wolves you have read or heard about in fairy tales! Occasionally they have been heard to attack cattle, but they are nice peaceful animals generally and they need to be protected so they do not become extinct.
