Some programs can use features from other programs, or you can add so called "plug-in" to an existing application. For instance, Skype is a separate application but it uses plug-ins for Firefox, internet Explorer and so on. If you have Mozilla installed but it's running at the moment you are trying to install Skype, you might have to close the browser in order for Skype to install the plug-in.
