under normal conditions you have four functioning corners--tires. when a blowout occurs you then have only three, because of the lack of traction provided by that lost tire. if you panic and hit the brakes hard your vehicle may dart to the side opposite of the blow out, especially if its a blow out on a front tire. more friction-tires, more stopping power. two good tires will pull your speed down much more than one good one.
the best thing to do is get a good grip on the steering wheel, let off the accelerator, then lightly apply the brakes and merge to the side of the road slowly. remember that if you jerk the wheel to move over you will most likely lose control because the vehicle handles much much different with one tire blown out. react calmly and dont panic. you'll be just fine.
