Like all hobbies the practitioner do it because they find the activity enjoyable.

While some prefer driving on the road, many prefer driving on gravel and off-road. This type of riding is very different from street or racetrack riding.

A few reasons:

  • Instead of just asphalt, you get to drive on varied terrain (asphalt, gravel, sand, snow, etc..)
  • It's physically hard to drive in terrain as it requires you to use your body much more actively.
  • The mental aspects of mastering difficult techniques are rewarding.
  • Trails not accessible to other vehicles tend to have less traffic and might be a welcome break from driving in cities / heavy traffic
  • Trails can take you to and through very scenic places like mountains, valleys, forests, etc.. and may also be combined with camping

Due to often riding where there is no traffic, safety is very important. If you have an accident the ambulance might not make it all the way to where you are, and if you are unable to call for help yourself it could take a very long time for someone to find you.

A few safety tips:

  • Always let someone know where you are going, and when you plan to be back.
  • Bring a fully charged mobile phone (But beware of coverage)
  • Ride with a friend if possible
  • There are commercial products which have a gps that can alert someone of your location if you require assistance.
  • Always bring a first aid kit, and simple tools for the bike.
  • Remember to wear your gear. While offroading it's not uncommon to have minor accidents and low speed falls, but if you're not wearing protective gear (helmet, gloves, jacket, pants and especially offroad boots) a minor accident might loose you a great deal of skin, or worse.

NOTE: in many countries (and probably states), the use of motor vehicles in terrain is

regulated by law. Remember to check your local legislation before heading out into the terrain as your activities might damage natural habitats, disturb campers. It's no fun trying to get away from noise and pollution, just to have a noisy dirt bike fly by you on a narrow trail. Be considerate!
