For health and safety reasons all produce has an expiration date. The law was passed years ago to protect consumers and give them a guideline as to the age of products and their shelf life. Use common sense...smell, sight and taste...if in doubt throw it out.
The date on the packages of sour cream that I recently bought are 'sell by' dates. The product should be of good quality for a couple weeks or more beyond that if unopened.
Once opened, it should probably be used within a week or so. Discard it if it starts to grow mold.
