Air will:
- If an compressed air pocket releases on shutdown of the engine it will spray Power Steering fluid all over engine. I had to put out my school bus because of this. THE FIRE WAS BRIEF BUT QUITE IMPRESSIVE
- The air in the oil is or causes cavitation in the pump and will destroy the pump very quickly
- If the air pocket moves at an inopportune time it will cause the power steering feature to stop and the steering will get very heavy.
To purge the air:
- Fill reservoir to the recommended level
- The following should be done with a cold engine and with in a couple minutes to reduce fire risk.
- Run the vehicle and top up the fluid as needed
- Turn the steering all the way side to side several times.
- Shut the vehicle off and watch for spray
- Allow the bubbles to come out of the oil and retry until the system runs without bubbly or foamy oil.
