Air will:

  • If an compressed air pocket releases on shutdown of the engine it will spray Power Steering fluid all over engine. I had to put out my school bus because of this. THE FIRE WAS BRIEF BUT QUITE IMPRESSIVE
  • The air in the oil is or causes cavitation in the pump and will destroy the pump very quickly
  • If the air pocket moves at an inopportune time it will cause the power steering feature to stop and the steering will get very heavy.

To purge the air:

  1. Fill reservoir to the recommended level
  2. The following should be done with a cold engine and with in a couple minutes to reduce fire risk.
  3. Run the vehicle and top up the fluid as needed
  4. Turn the steering all the way side to side several times.
  5. Shut the vehicle off and watch for spray
  6. Allow the bubbles to come out of the oil and retry until the system runs without bubbly or foamy oil.

Why is it important to be sure that there is no air in the steering gear system?

All cars with Power Steering use a hydraulic system. This means that is uses oil compressed by a pump to push a cylinder, or gear box mechanism to turn the rack on the car. If there is air in said system, the air will compress instead of the oil being pushed, thus resulting a delayed, or soft steering situation It can be dangerous to drive a car with air in the power steering pump assembly. It may fail and cause the car to steer out of control.

Air bag light won't go out on your 1997 Holden vectra?

Hi, manual says that there may be a fault with your air bag system. Get it checked with a local garage with vauxhall diagnostic equipment. My light went on when I removed factory steering wheel and replaced with aftermarket steering wheel (no air bag). The system senses that the air bag is not present, and "believes" that there is a fault with the system.
